Planning to pop the question in Connecticut? You’re in the right place. From charming seaside towns to sweeping mountain views, Connecticut offers some of the most romantic backdrops for a surprise wedding proposal — and as a photographer who specializes in capturing these once-in-a-lifetime moments, I’m here to help you make it unforgettable.
Whether you want something private and intimate or grand and cinematic, here’s everything you need to know to plan a surprise proposal photoshoot that will leave you both smiling every time you look at the pictures.
A proposal is one of those rare, fleeting moments in life that you can’t fully take in while it’s happening — your heart is racing, emotions are high, and before you know it, it’s over. Hiring a proposal photographer ensures that:
And yes — I can stay hidden, blend into the background, or even pretend to be “just another tourist with a camera” until the big reveal.
1. Mystic Seaport & Olde Mistick Village
Cobblestone paths, charming shops, and the harbor at sunset make this a picture-perfect spot for a romantic, storybook proposal.
2. Gillette Castle State Park
With its whimsical architecture and sweeping views of the Connecticut River, it feels like stepping into a fairytale.
3. Harkness Memorial State Park
Lush gardens, a grand mansion, and the ocean all in one location — perfect for a timeless, elegant vibe.
4. Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven
Sunset by the lighthouse? Classic, coastal, and breathtaking.
5. Wadsworth Falls State Park
A hidden gem for couples who love nature — imagine getting engaged with a waterfall as your backdrop.
Pick the Right Time of Day
Golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) gives that dreamy, romantic light that flatters every couple.
Plan a Distraction
Suggest a “casual walk,” “holiday card photos,” or “a day trip” so they’re dressed nicely without suspecting anything.
Coordinate With Your Photographer
Share exact details — where you’ll stand, the signal you’ll give, and how you want the moment to unfold.
Add a Personal Touch
Bring flowers, champagne, or incorporate a special location that means something to you both.
Once you’ve both caught your breath (and maybe wiped a few happy tears), we can capture a quick mini engagement session right on the spot. These photos are perfect for your save-the-dates and to share your news with the world.
If you’re dreaming of that perfect “Yes!” moment and want it captured beautifully, I’d love to help. I offer customized surprise proposal photography packages throughout Connecticut — from discreet coverage to full engagement sessions.

Connecticut is filled with gorgeous locations that make the perfect backdrop for your engagement photos. Whether you're dreaming of a romantic garden, a breezy beach, or charming downtown streets, there's a spot for every couple's vibe. As a Connecticut engagement and elopement photographer, I love helping my clients find the perfect setting to tell their love story. Here are 10 of my favorite places for an unforgettable engagement session:
With hundreds of blooming roses and winding pathways, Elizabeth Park feels like stepping into a fairytale. It's especially magical in late spring and early summer when the flowers are at their peak.
Wickham Park offers sweeping hilltop views, stunning gardens, and peaceful wooded areas. In the fall, it transforms into a colorful wonderland that’s perfect for cozy, romantic photos.
Harkness Park brings together everything — a historic mansion, lush gardens, and a dreamy beachfront. It’s one of my top choices for couples who want both elegance and a relaxed ocean vibe.
For a laid-back, barefoot-in-the-sand engagement session, Silver Sands is perfect. The wide open beaches and the boardwalk offer beautiful, natural light and plenty of space to explore.
If you love classic architecture and a little old-world charm, Yale’s gothic-style buildings and quiet courtyards create a timeless, romantic atmosphere for your photos.
Adventurous couples will love the hike to Heublein Tower at Talcott Mountain. The panoramic views of the Connecticut River Valley are breathtaking, especially at golden hour!
Topsmead is peaceful, open, and simply stunning in every season. The historic English cottage, rolling fields, and forest trails offer tons of variety for your session.
This hidden gem in Connecticut’s Quiet Corner has a beautiful lake, charming boathouse, and scenic woodlands, making it ideal for couples who want a more private, nature-filled location.
Mystic is picture-perfect with its cobblestone streets, colorful shops, and waterfront views. If you're looking for a classic New England vibe with a touch of coastal romance, you’ll love it here.
Want a stylish, urban feel? West Hartford Center’s cute cafes, murals, and pretty streets create a fun, lively backdrop for engagement photos with lots of personality.
Choosing a location that feels right for you two is one of the first (and most exciting!) steps in planning your engagement photos. Whether you’re drawn to the beach, the forest, or the city streets, I’d love to help you find the perfect spot and create images that feel so authentically you.
Why Hire a Professional Photographer for Your Proposal?
Proposals are fleeting moments full of raw emotion. A professional photographer can discreetly capture every joyful tear, surprise gasp, and heartfelt "yes!" without disrupting the moment. Not only will you have stunning photos to share with family and friends, but the images also serve as the perfect memento for one of life’s most cherished milestones.
Hiring a Connecticut photographer who knows the best proposal spots, understands natural lighting, and knows how to stay incognito can make all the difference. Plus, if you’re nervous about logistics, I can help guide you through planning the best time and place to propose while ensuring the photos turn out flawless.

Surprise proposal photography is a unique and special way to capture the moment when someone pops the question to their significant other. It is a trend that has been gaining popularity in recent years, as more and more couples want to remember the special moment in a way that is intimate and personalized.
The first step in surprise proposal photography is to plan the proposal itself. This means thinking about the location, timing, and overall feel of the proposal. Some couples choose to propose in a romantic location like a beach or a park, while others opt for a more personal location like their home or a place that holds special meaning to them. Timing is also important, as the couple will want to choose a time that is private and intimate, and when the lighting is just right.
Once the proposal is planned, the next step is to find a photographer. This is where surprise proposal photography can get tricky, as the couple will want to find a photographer who is experienced in capturing candid and spontaneous moments. They should be able to work discreetly and not disturb the proposal. It is also important to find a photographer who is willing to work with the couple to create a personalized experience that reflects their personalities and style.
During the proposal itself, the photographer will typically be hidden nearby, capturing the special moment from a distance. They will be able to capture the couple's reactions and emotions, as well as the details of the proposal itself. This is where experience and skill come into play, as the photographer will need to be able to anticipate the couple's movements and be ready to capture the perfect shot at the right moment.
After the proposal, the photographer will edit the photos and create a collection that the couple can treasure for years to come. The final product can be shared with friends and family, and also serve as a reminder of the special moment when the couple decided to spend the rest of their lives together.
Overall, surprise proposal photography is a unique and special way to capture the moment when someone pops the question to their significant other. It is a trend that has been gaining popularity in recent years, as more and more couples want to remember the special moment in a way that is intimate and personalized. With the right planning and a skilled photographer, couples can create a lasting memory of their special moment that they will cherish forever.

Getting together for an engagement photo session with my wedding day couples is always so fun. I love to take this time to get to know each other even more face to face. My couples get a feel for what it is like to be in front of my camera. They are able to get out some of their nervousness when they see that it really is just a fun time loving on each other while I capture it all. I will guide my couples into natural poses and give simples prompts when needed. Much of the time I love to see how they interact with each other naturally before I jump in with poses and prompts.
We work together to pick a session location that is perfect for them. We can head to a park or forest, an open field covering in wild flowers, or head to the beach to walk in the waves. I also love to photography couples in their own home. Cozy on the couch with a cup of tea, or in the yard with their fur babies.

Robin and Peter reached out to me earlier this year interested in booking me for their micro wedding at Geer Mountain Peony Farm located in Kent, Connecticut. . Robin and Peter are planning to spend their intimate wedding day celebrating with 30 of their closest friends and family. Their Connecticut wedding venue is a beautiful private property with a lake and being hosted by Clover and Ivy events. Not only are small intimate wedding days a favorite of mine to photograph, but this wedding is special to me because I grew up right in Kent, Connecticut just five minutes away from their venue location.
As we talked more about the details of their wedding day we thought it would be a great idea to have their engagement session at the location of their wedding venue. It was so wonderful to be able to walk around and get familiar with the venue before the big day. Robin and Peter showed me their vision for their wedding day details, pointing out where tables will be set and the ceremony location.

Emily and Jim wanted to head into the woods for their engagement photography session, so that is exactly what we did. Connecticut is overflowing with gorgeous locations for photography sessions. We headed to one of my favorite spots in Central CT.
I love to start of engagement sessions just letting the couple be themselves. Be silly, be serious, be camera shy, I love it all. I enjoy seeing the natural chemistry between two people first. Then as we move throughout the session I will give guidance on as needed on hang placement and poses. I have been known to thrown in a very corny jokes if that’s what it takes to break the ice and help the couple relax and have fun.
