Why You Need an Engagement Session | Connecticut Wedding Photographer
/Why an Engagement Session is a Must Before Your Big Day
Congratulations! You’ve picked the date, found your dream venue, and now you’re diving into the details. As a Connecticut wedding photographer, one of the most common questions I get is: "Do we really need an engagement session?"
My answer is always a resounding yes.
While it’s tempting to think of it as "just more photos," an engagement session is actually a vital "warm-up" for your wedding day. Here are four reasons why it’s a game-changer for your photography experience.
1. Building a Connection with Your Photographer
Your wedding photographer is the one vendor who will be by your side for almost every minute of your big day. An engagement session allows us to get to know each other in a low-pressure environment. By the time your wedding rolls around, I won’t feel like a "vendor"—I’ll feel like a friend who just happens to have a professional camera.
2. Shaking Off the "Camera Jitters"
Let’s be honest: most of us aren't professional models. It’s totally normal to feel a little awkward when a lens is pointed at you. This session is the perfect "practice run" to help you feel relaxed and confident. We’ll find the poses and prompts that feel natural to you, so on your wedding day, you can focus on each other instead of worrying about where to put your hands.
3. Personalizing Your Story
Wedding days are beautiful, but they often follow a tight timeline. An engagement session is your chance to showcase your personality in a place that means something to you. Whether it’s a cozy coffee shop, a hike in the Litchfield Hills, or something totally unique—like a baseball stadium—it adds a unique chapter to your love story.
4. Professional Content for Your Planning
Beyond the experience, you’ll have a gallery of high-quality images ready for your Save the Dates, wedding website, and reception decor.
Featured Session: A Home Run in Waterbury, CT
To show you exactly what I mean by "personalizing your story," I have to share this incredible session at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.
When this couple told me they wanted to do their photos at a baseball stadium, I knew we were in for something special. We had the whole field to ourselves, capturing everything from playful moments in the field to romantic shots on the stadium bleachers. It was the perfect reflection of their energy and shared love for the game.
I am so excited to see these two again in July 2026 for their wedding at La Bella Vista.
La Bella Vista is one of my favorite Waterbury wedding venues because of its stunning courtyard and elegant ballrooms. Knowing how they interact in front of the camera now means we’re going to breeze through their portraits at the venue, leaving them more time to celebrate with their family and friends!
Whether you want a classic New England vibe or a unique "home run" session of your own, I’d love to capture it.
